How do HP recycle ink cartridges?

Why buy HP original ink?

1. Once cartridges are received at HP's recycling facility, they go through a de-packaging process

2. Cartridges are then automatically sorted into cartridge families by using an X-ray processing machine

3. They are then mechanically separated and shredded into raw materials such as plastics and metals

4. The shredded PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastics are then taken to a refining facility where they are mixed with recycled bottle resin and additives to create recycled PET or RPET.

5. The RPET is then heated and melted at 575F. The extruded spaghetti-like material is then cooled, chopped into small pieces and then shipped for processing.

HP Recycling - how HP recycle their cartridges

The question "why should we buy HP original ink" is something that crops up regularly. As an engineering organisation we see many failures caused by remanufactured inks (and printheads). So
metimes this is as a result of poor quality ink being used by the 3rd party suppliers and remanufacturers which can cause clogging in the printheads - especially where the ink mix is too thick. This also leads to ink leakage (and possible damage of other components within the printer). Sometimes 3rd party inks don't embed into the paper the way it should - causing customers' prints to smudge, fade or streak. We also see problems with RIDS assemblies (the tubes which carry the ink). Another common problem is that the remanufacturers re-use the old ink cartridges which contain electronic chips. Old electronic chips can cause seating problems (where the inks won't seat properly into the Designjet) or customers complain of electronic/system errors on their Designjet. In many cases we recommend that the customer switches back to HP original inks - which then resolves the fault.

There is no doubt that the exact agents which comprise the "HP ink mix" are very difficult for remanufacturers to replicate (and HP don't intend to make it easy for them after all!). HP actually design and engineer their Designjets in such a way so as to ensure their own 'ink-mix' works well. This mix varies according to the Designjet, and of course remanufacturers have a hard job keeping up with it all.

While on face value there appears to be cost savings when purchasing non-HP ink, this must be weighed carefully against increased service/repair costs and, of course, quality of image plus the cost of downtime to the business while you wait for your printer to be repaired. You often also void warranties/support contracts if you use non-HP ink. For these reasons we always recommend using HP original ink - to ensure the best quality printing results combined with reduced downtime and service/repair costs.

Interesting Recycling Facts:

- some ink cartridges use upto 50-75% of recycled contents

- the recipe for HP's RPET is a closely guarded secret - akin to the recipe for coca-cola!

- HP pledged to use 100 million pounds of recycled plastic in HP printers and cartridges by 2011
