What paper should I buy for my Designjet?


HP recycled bond paper was designed to help meet the environmental objectives of businesses and provide trouble-free printing. Chlorine-free HP Recycled Bond Paper is made of 100% recycled base paper and is compliant with industry-leading environmental certifications. It is ideal for everyday prints and is a high-performance, lightweight paper - which can translate to lower transportation costs. Ideal for GIS professionals, architects, engineers, retail and repro houses.

Each Designjet has it's own compatible paper, so you need to ensure you purchase the right size paper roll for your machine - as well as the right type of paper with respect to the inks that your Designjet uses (i.e. there are Pigment based inks, Dye based inks and Vivera Pigment inks - and some papers work better with particular types of inks). If you see a paper marked "Universal" this means it is suitable for all the different types of inks.

If you're not sure please contact us for free advice, to avoid ordering the wrong paper. As a general rule of thumb, most companies order the following 4 x papers on a regular basis (excluding specialist photo papers/banner materials etc):

1. Universal Coated - this is an everyday paper but the special extra smooth coating allows the ink to "sit" on top of the paper more and will provide you with sharper, brighter and more vivid images - perfect when you want your print to "POP"! This paper is the heaviest of the 4, at 95 g/m2. It is also possible to purchase Universal Heavyweight Coated Paper 120g/m2 - 30.5m which is available in 4 sizes (24", 36", 42", 60").

 2. Bright White - great for client facing work, this is definitely the whitest paper of the 4 papers listed here and is slightly heavier than the HP Universal Bond and Recycled Bond papers at 90 g/m2. Compare HP Universal Bond and Bright White Inkjet Paper against select Oce paper here.

3. Recycled Bond - standard everyday working paper. If you looked at this paper by itself without comparing it against the other 3 listed you would definitely say it was 'off white' as it has a creamy/yellowy hue. You can also detect tiny little dots and micro fibres within the paper - which is normal for recycled papers. The weight is the same as the Universal Bond at 80 g/m2.

4. Universal Bond - standard everyday working paper. The weight of this paper is less than the Bright White or Universal Coated at 80 g/m2. Compare HP Universal Bond and Bright White Inkjet Paper against select Oce paper here.

Common mistakes when ordering paper include:

 - ordering paper too wide (i.e. a 42"/1067mm roll won't work with a 24"/610mm machine) or
- too long (i.e. a 91.4 metre roll will be too large/heavy and won't fit on a Designjet 450/500/510/1050 as it's designed to be used with the larger 4000/5000, T series or Z series Designjets etc).
