The best Resolution

12 January 2012 - 20:26

A FAMILY-run Oakley business has scooped a top business accolade for being a great all-rounder – an emotional triumph that comes just weeks after the firm’s founder died.

Resolution, a specialist HP Designjet and Laserjet printer sales and repairs business, based at Park Farm, Rectory Road, has been recognised by The Best Business Awards. The company, which trades as hpplotter.co.uk, won the UK Best Small to Medium Business Award.

News of the award came at an especially poignant moment for the team at Resolution, following the death of managing director Tony Bray. He died aged 44 in November after battling stomach cancer for two years

His sister, Nicola Bray, who has been a Resolution director since 2010 and who now heads the business, said: “This award is a tremendous way for us to celebrate Resolution’s business achievements over the past 11 years. “Tony took a small back-bedroom business and moulded it into the thriving and award-winning company it is today. “We are now one of only 12 companies in the UK and Ireland who are HP Designjet Elite Club (DEC) members and we are recognised by HP as being specialists in the field of large format printers.”

Nicola said everyone feels incredibly honoured to receive the award. She said: “Without a doubt, we are a tight-knit, knowledgeable team with strong business skills. However on a personal level, it’s been very difficult for us to lose Tony – he was a great MD, friend and respected work colleague as well as my brother. “When it became clear that Tony might not live long enough to hear the award results, we decided to tell him that we’d entered as a special surprise for him. We declared we were aiming high and striving for the UK Best Small to Medium Business Award. Unfortunately, he died just two days later and a few weeks before we heard the official news that we’d won. “However, this award is a great reflection of us all and without a doubt, Resolution will continue to go from strength to strength. We’re already on target to hit a record turnover again this year and we’re looking forward to 2012.”

A panel of judges were impressed with Resolution’s products, people, innovative marketing and customer service.

Judging chairman Andrew Areoff said: “This is a great example of a company that spotted a niche market simply through observation. “By noticing that businesses using Hewlett Packard (HP) large format printers would benefit from additional technical support, they completely changed the direction of the business. “Resolution set up a nationwide network of HP trained engineers and became a specialist business with a strong focus on first-class customer service. “When the recession hit in 2008, Resolution realised that 80 per cent of its customers were in the building trade, which was badly hit. “By targeting the public sector and developing a rental service for HP printers, it found new niche markets and actually managed to increase turnover.”
