Glossary of Common Paper Terms

All paper calculations and tests use industry-standard test methods, the key ones being:

  • Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) - typically used for products manufactured in North America
  • International Organization for Standardization (ISO) - typically used for products manufactured from other parts of the World

Each test method employed has a reference number, that over time may be updated and a revised reference number given. Manufacturers will usually list the reference number of the exact test method employed, next to the displayed test value on their specification sheets.

By using either a TAPPI or ISO standard, the industry helps ensure consistency. However it should be noted that the TAPPI and ISO standards utilise different methods of measuring and as such the two standards cannot be correlated or used interchangeably.
