HP DesignJet Z6 - customer feedback after 2 years

05 December 2022

Sometimes the best feedback is from users directly who offer their unpolished reviews and take you behind the scenes with their business to provide the real 'nitty gritty' on how they have got on with their DesignJet printer - and provide the Pros and the Cons as they see it.

I was checking YouTube and there is a video from a company called Design Gaff which is one such video. Not surprisingly he is a fan of the HP DesignJet Z6ps 24" although he wishes he would have purchased the larger 44" model to give him more scope (he didn't only due to lack of space as he was home-working over the Covid period and went with the smaller model instead). His feedback after 2.5 years of use was as follows:

  • print resolution 2400 x 1200 dpi
  • Quality is very good, colours are vibrant, greys are beautiful, text is sharp which is critical for him as a graphic artist
  • Inks are not cheap however - it costs him 825 euros to fill printer with 6 ink - he says in fairness all other pigment-based printers use 9, 10, 12 inks so since the Z6ps only uses 6 inks he decided to purchase as it worked out cheaper for him - whereas your Canons, Epsons etc will use more ink.
  • He primarily prints 12 x 16" canvas prints, and calculated he'd have to print 20 prints before he covered the cost of his inks - or 25 prints before he started making a profit, if he took into account the cost of the media/paper and stretcher bars.
  • he felt the 300ml ink tanks were "great"
  • he had his 1st issue within the first year - 2 printheads went at the same time but HP sent out replacement printheads within 2 days, under the 1 year warranty without any issues
  • the other issue he had is that his Satin poster paper was getting a magenta tint where it was meant to be just white - HP found that the solution was the printer just needed to be updated and HP got it sorted quickly for him
  • In fact he was very pleased with HP's response in sorting out his two issues
  • Printheads are user replaceable, and he confirms that you can just pop the old one out and stick the new one in - with other printers you can't easily replace the printheads yourself and have to pay for an engineer - in Ireland the printheads don't cost a fortune either - they cost 100-110 euros each - so it doesn't break the bank.
